Hit record. Get the rough cut.

Cleancut is a Mac editor for coding screencasts. It watches your lesson the way you would: it cuts the dead air, the retakes and false starts, and the silent minutes you spent fixing your terminal. You review the result on a clip timeline and export one MP4.

macOS 26 or later. Transcription and screen reading run on your Mac.

Everything you’d cut by hand, found for you.

Every cut comes with its reason, and every one can be put back with a click. These are real cuts from a real NestJS lesson, with the notes Cleancut wrote for each.

Dead air

Pauses between thoughts

Gaps in your voice are tightened, with a breath of room kept on each side so the edit doesn’t feel clipped.

Retake

The sentence you said twice

The stumbled attempt goes; the last complete one stays.

I’m going to go ahead and back in the terminal. I’m going to go ahead and back in the terminal, now…

False start

A sentence that trails off

Even when speech recognition mishears it and glues it to the previous line.

[179]or [180]restart. [181]I’ll then go ahead and restart my terminal.

Aside

Talk that wasn’t for viewers

Mic checks, notes to yourself, “let me redo that”.

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3.

Silent mistake

The wrong command, fixed in silence

Cleancut reads the screen during quiet stretches, so it sees a command fail and get re-run.

db:migrate fails with url undefined and is immediately re-run successfully

Silent detour

Troubleshooting you didn’t narrate

Switching tabs, restarting containers, scrolling logs. If your next line says “I’ll restart my terminal”, viewers don’t need to watch it.

Waiting

Pulls, installs and builds

Progress bars and startup logs nobody reads.

Image pull progress

Kept at 3×

Silent typing that matters

Code you type that stays in the project is the lesson. Cleancut keeps it and plays it faster instead of cutting it.

From record button to MP4 in one sitting.

Cleancut replaces the hour of scrubbing through a raw take. You keep the judgment calls; it does the finding.

  1. 1Record

    Screen and mic, one click. A countdown, then a ● in the menu bar to stop. Or drop in recordings you already have; new takes line up at the end of the timeline.

  2. 2Auto Edit

    Your voice is transcribed on your Mac, the quiet stretches are read for what’s on screen, and the AI marks what to cut. Cuts are applied right away.

  3. 3Review

    Click a clip and delete it, shift-click and drag to select a range, drag clips to reorder. Redo the AI pass on just a selection. Every change undoes.

    Space⌫⌘⌫⇧ drag⌘Z
  4. 4Export

    One MP4, H.264 at your recording’s resolution. Upload it to YouTube, Udemy or Mux as is.

The AI never touches a timestamp.

A wrong cut ruins a lesson, so the AI only points at things Cleancut can check. It names words by number and quotes them; screen moments are numbered frames. Anything that doesn’t match your recording is thrown out.

// what the AI reads
(1:28.6) [177]port [178]6650 [179]or
(1:30.8) [180]restart.
<screen 1:31.6–1:48.6, 17.0s silent>
[E14 1:31.6] on screen: …ECONNREFUSED
[E17 1:34.6] + docker-compose up
</screen>
(1:47.6) [181]I'll [182]then [183]go …

// what it answers
{"start":179,"end":180,"reason":"falseStart",
 "text":"or restart."}
{"from":14,"to":31,"reason":"detour"}

Your video stays on your Mac

Transcription uses Apple’s on-device speech model, and screen text is read on-device too. Only text goes to the AI model.

Your files are never changed

Cleancut edits a list of decisions, not your recordings. Media stays where you keep it.

Bring your own AI key

Use any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. A 20-minute lesson costs cents.

Free to edit. Pro for the AI cuts.

The editor is the same in both. Pro adds the cuts that need judgment.

Questions

What do I need to run it?

A Mac on macOS 26 or later. Cleancut asks for Screen Recording and Microphone access the first time you record.

What if it cuts something I wanted?

Every cut is listed with its reason, and one switch puts it back. Nothing is deleted from your recording, and every edit undoes with ⌘Z.

Will it cut the code I type silently?

No. Silent typing of code that stays in your project is kept and sped up 3×. Silent troubleshooting, waiting and mistakes are what get cut.

Does my video get uploaded anywhere?

No. Audio and video never leave your Mac. The AI receives the transcript and text read from your screen during silent stretches, with anything that looks like an API key or password blanked first. Cleancut asks before it sends anything.

I’ve already edited half a lesson. Can I redo just one part?

Yes. Select a clip or shift-drag a range and choose Re-analyze Selection. Everything outside it, including your own cuts, stays as it is.

Is it only for coding tutorials?

It works on any screen recording with a voice track. Its judgment about terminals, commands and typing is tuned for coding lessons.
